About Helen Krieger
I’m a renter, a queer woman, and a TV writer who can’t stay away from local advocacy. It started when I was living in New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
I was in the neighborhood of Bywater, part of "the sliver by the river" - higher ground that didn't flood. So there was a big need to find housing for displaced residents in this 200-year old, already full neighborhood.
I was named president of our neighborhood association to help lead us through the early years of this process. It was hard work, but I loved it, because I got to work with our residents, historic commission, and local developers to really make a difference.
The project I’m most proud of: we helped turn an under-utilized, historic factory into 37-units of 100% affordable apartments for working artists and musicians who wanted to come back to the city. Those apartments still exist, they’re still affordable, and there are now almost 70 of them.

Helen Krieger on Housing and Abundance
“We need more housing, and the most efficient place to build that housing is within existing cities where higher density means less land use per person and also less transportation, infrastructure and utility costs per person.”
“To stop rising rent prices now, and to have any hope of lowering them in the future, we need every possible tool at our disposal including increased supply, rent stabilization, and government subsidy of affordable housing.”
“Supporting our non profit agencies that build LEED certified, 100% affordable housing.”
