About John Tang
John Tang’s story is the real American dream: hope, heartbreak, and triumph. He fled Vietnam as a child refugee and survived an extraordinary journey to safety before building a life defined by hard work, kindness, and a deep commitment to giving back.
Today John is running for Cupertino City Council because he loves this community and is determined to make it stronger for the next generation.
John was five years old when Saigon fell. At eight, he and his family made a harrowing boat journey to freedom. After 13 months in various Malaysian refugee camps, they immigrated to Canada, where he learned English, worked hard, and found his footing as an immigrant outsider determined to belong. That experience never left him. It gave him his core values of kindness, integrity, the belief that we all need a lift sometimes, and a lifelong drive to pay forward the generosity of the communities that made his success possible.
